G. K. Chesterton The Man Who Was Thursday

First published in 1908, G. K. Chesterton’s “The Man Who Was Thursday” has been described as a metaphysical thriller. It is the story of Gabriel Syme, who is recruited by Scotland Yard as part of an anti-anarchist task force. When he meets Lucian Gregory, a poet and member of a secret society of anarchists, he gains access to the underground movement. The group is lead by a central council of seven men, each named for a day of the week. Gabriel convinces the local chapter to elect him to the vacant position of “Thursday” and he soon discovers that he is not the only one pretending to be something that he is not. What follows is one of the most absurd and clever plots to ever have been written, one in which Chesterton’s wonderfully high-spirited prose carries the reader along in a boisterous rush. Arguably the author’s finest work, certainly his most popular, “The Man Who Was Thursday” is a wild, mad, hilarious and profoundly moving tale that ultimately defies classification. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

G.K. CHESTERTON: THE EVERLASTING MAN

A man could not be a means to an end, at any rate to any other man's end. But there is another aspect of the popular element as represented by the shepherds which has not perhaps been so fully ...

The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton - Goodreads

The Everlasting Man is not your typical Christian apologetics classic. I say this because G.K. Chesterton is not aiming to write a pure 'defence of the faith' as it were, but to write a work that better explores the relationship of Christianity to history. It has become something of a fashionable statement to ignore the relevance of ...

It was because of the sophistication of the G. K. Chesterton tales, the way the "small dusty-looking Roman Catholic priest," also called "little priest," solved cases, almost like Sherlock Holmes, that I dislike the TV versions of the man, for he seems so silly to me, and his large size and overweight nature and facial features does not resemble the G. K. Chesterton character at all.

Editor’s note: The following is extracted from The Defendant, by G.K. Chesterton (published 1901).. Гилберт Кит Честертон The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare

Gilbert Chesterton The Man Who Was Thursday

A WILD, MAD, HILARIOUS AND PROFOUNDLY MOVING TALE. It is very difficult to classify «The Man Who Was Thursday.» It is possible to say that it is a gripping adventure story of murderous criminals and brilliant policemen; but it was to be expected that the author of the Father Brown stories should tell a detective story like no-one else. On this level, therefore, «The Man Who Was Thursday» succeeds superbly; if nothing else, it is a magnificent tour-de-force of suspense-writing. However, the reader will soon discover that it is much more than that. Carried along on the boisterous rush of the narrative by Chesterton's wonderful high-spirited style, he will soon see that he is being carried into much deeper waters than he had planned on; and the totally unforeseeable denouement will prove for the modern reader, as it has for thousands of others since 1908 when the book was first published, an inevitable and moving experience, as the investigators finally discover who Sunday is.
